What’s black and white and fuzzy all over? Why, it’s a hickory tussock moth caterpillar. I found this one crawling on a bush in my yard. 
It seems these guys prefer to munch on, among other trees, elms, hickories and oaks — of which I have plenty in my yard.
The adult moths, I think, are a little less impressive color-wise, as you can see here.
Below is a video of this caterpillar as he crawled across a piece of my daughter’s play equipment.

We found 5 of these little guys yesterday at a friend’s house in Fort Ann, NY a bit further north of you. Two have already encased themselves in cocoons and we are watching as the other ones do the same.
