Owl struck by car

January
10

Sometime this morning, this owl was found dazed and confused in the middle of a road. A state trooper picked him up and took him to the Green Chimneys School in Patterson, which has a wildlife center. He (or she) is a barred owl and the thinking is, it was struck by a car. owl.jpg

Paul Kupchok, the school’s wildlife director, checked the bird out, straightening its wings, looking at its legs, etc.

“As far as I could tell, there’s nothing broken. It grabbed me with its feet as hard as it could,” Kupchok said.

The bird was picked up sometime between about midnight and dawn. Can’t see it in the resized photo, but the owl has cut just above its beak. Based on the way the owl sat in its cage, kind of supporting itself with its wings and not minding visitors too much, Kupchok theorized it was still kind of out of it from its accident. He planned to try and feed it. If the owl doesn’t show signs of improving, he’ll take it to a local veterinarian.

Turns out, my colleague Terry Corcoran learned about this owl while doing his police rounds this morning. Troopers, Terry said, said the bird was struck twice by two different cars. The whole thing happened around 7 a.m.
