Got deer?

Ever wonder what happens to the dead deer, raccoons, skunks, possums and other flattened fauna decorating the area’s roads? Well, if the local highway or public works department doesn’t scoop them up, they become breakfast, lunch or dinner for scavengers. More, plus a somewhat graphic photo, after the jump.

These two immature turkey vultures were enjoying a mid-morning snack today on Ballyhack Road in Patterson. I managed to keep inching my car forward to get close enough to grab a quick photo through the windshield.

Of course there’s a group dedicated to promoting the “scientific study of the life habits and needs of the Turkey Vulture.”

While these two birds don’t have the typical red head like adult turkey vultures, I’m pretty sure they’re not the TV’s more southern cousin, black vultures. Young TVs, I’ve read, have a black head.

crows also eat carrion. though yeah their heads are ugly enough to be TV.
